  • Oscar-winning director Milos Forman dies aged 86 after short illness

Forman was born in Caslav, Czech Republic, in 1932. His mother died at Auschwitz. Forman said in a 2004 interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Forman returned to top form three years later, however, when he released Amadeus. "I was alone", he recalled. Later, Forman discovered that his actual biological father had survived the war and ended up in Peru.

Czech news agency CTK reported that Forman died on Friday in the United States after a short illness.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Milos, real name Jan Tomas Forman, graduated from the Prague Film Faculty of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, and won acclaim with films like Black Peter and Oscar-nominated The Loves of a Blonde and The Fireman's Ball, before fleeing Europe in 1968 to become an American citizen.

"In his films you can see the author", he said. The Firemen's Ball triggered an uproar amongst the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.

But when he was shown the final version, Ponti refused to pay the promised $80,000 (65,000 euros) - an astronomic sum at that time - slamming the film as a trivial parody.

He was the orphan of Nazi Holocaust victims, Forman had abandoned his homeland after communist troops invaded in 1968 and crushed a brief period of political and artistic freedom known as the Prague Spring. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Forman's second Oscar for Best Director.

People were also apprised about the various health programmes and services being provided by the department. He asserted that people should not experience any financial hardship while getting quality medical service.

Writer and producer Larry Karaszewski, who made Man On The Moon and The People vs Larry Flynt with Forman, wrote: "Milos Forman was our friend and our teacher".

"My instincts were too Czech".

"Milos loved life. I will miss his laughter", he added.

He followed up his success in 1979 with a film adaptation of the hit musical "Hair", and then in 1981 with an adaptation of E. L. Doctorow's novel "Ragtime".

After his first USA film, 1971's Taking Off, flopped, Forman didn't get a chance to direct a major feature again for five years. He also shot a film version, released internationally in 2009.

Forman, also known for two biopics about controversial Americans - The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) and Man on the Moon (1999) - died Friday in the USA after a short illness, according to his wife, Martina, who broke the news to the Czech news agency CTK.

- 1958-62: Married to actress Jana Brejchova. With the latter he had twins boys, Matej and Petr, before leaving Czechoslovakia.
