  • E. coli outbreak warning extended to all types of romaine lettuce products

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified that the contaminated lettuce comes from the Yuma region, it has warned consumers that most package labels do not identifying growing regions.

The current CDC warnings cover whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, as well as chopped romaine, salads and salad mixes that contain romaine.

Since no single grower, brand, or distributor has been implicated in the outbreak, consumers should also dispose of any store-bought romaine lettuce they already have at home, the advisory says.

The agency said 53 people in 16 states have become infected with E. coli from lettuce, 31 people have been hospitalized, including five people who have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, while no deaths have been reported.

Based on this new information, the FDA is advising that consumers avoid all romaine lettuce from Yuma. "If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away". As of yet, the infected states include: Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Virginia, Missouri, Louisiana, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Alaska.

The CDC report that most people will experience symptoms of E.coli infection within three to four days after eating or drinking the contaminated item. The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads.

As of Wednesday, the hospitalization rate for this outbreak was about 58 percent, much higher than the 30 percent normally associated with infections involving E. coli O157: H7, according to a CDC update sent to clinicians on Thursday.

State and local health officials are continuing to interview sick people to ask about the foods they ate and other exposures before they became ill.
