  • The FDA put out a public alert not a recall on romaine lettuce

Fourteen more people have gotten sick from romaine lettuce tainted with E. coli, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Friday, bringing the outbreak's total number of cases to almost 100.

The FDA has identified Harrison Farms of Yuma, Arinzoa, as the grower and sole source of the whole-head romaine lettuce that sickened people at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center in Nome, Alaska.

Although not one of those affected by the outbreak has died, 10 patients developed a unsafe form of kidney failure, the agency said. No deaths are reported.

People who have become sick with E. coli will begin to feel the symptoms between two and eight days after consumption of the contaminated food.

"If its coming from a processor, which is bagged lettuce, it becomes much more hard to trace that because often times several farms will sell to the plants", said Eric Derstine, horticulture extension agent for Pitt County.

The national E. coli outbreak that has been linked to contaminated romaine lettuce has worsened, as more than 30 new cases have been reported.

Pennsylvania has seen the worst of the outbreak, with 18 people being infected by the lettuce.

The CDC repeated its advice that people not eat or buy romaine lettuce, which is commonly used in salads, unless they can confirm it is not from the Yuma growing region. However, there are more than two dozen other farms under investigation as possible parts of this latest outbreak. That farm's harvest has ended, Harris said.

Erring on the side of caution, Wise said: "People should not be eating any type of romaine lettuce". A Facebook page indicates the farms grow or have grown cotton and wheat in addition to lettuce.

The CDC anxious that E. coli health problem can be really major, even fatal.

A person answering the phone at Harrison Farms hung up twice on a Washington Post reporter after she identified herself as a member of the media.

While officials have tracked the outbreak to chopped and whole head romaine from Yuma, they don't know if it was tainted in the fields or at other point, like during packaging or distribution. "Restaurants should not be serving any type of romaine lettuce".

This is the most significant Shiga-toxin producing E.coli break out considering that a 2006 break out connected to spinach grown in the Salinas Valley in California, Wise stated. The 16-year-old from rural Sacramento had been eating salad every day the week before she got sick.
