Amazon grows its workforce in BC adding 3000 new jobs

Combined with 1,000 new Amazon jobs announced in November, this will bring the company's total employment across Canada to 9,000.

Amazon announced today that they are going to open a new 38,000 square metre office tower at the old post office and it will go fully online by 2022.

The headquarters will be a hub for tech and innovation, and will have 3,000 job openings in e-commerce technology, cloud computing and machine learning. Amazon's customer fulfillment associates can also take advantage of its innovative Career Choice program, which pays 95 per cent of the cost of tuition to pursue continuing education courses in in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

The online retail giant now employs more than 1,000 researchers and engineers in Vancouver, primarily creating new products and services for the company's worldwide retail business and Amazon Web Services.

Trudeau said at a press conference in Vancouver that Amazon chose Canada for a number of reasons, including the availability of skilled labor talent. They now operate a 156,000 square-foot location in TELUS Garden which opened to Amazon employees in 2015. The company expects to grow to 5,000 corporate employees in Vancouver in the coming years across all of its locations in the city.

Amazon first established a presence in Vancouver in 2013. But Vancouver did not make the company's list of 20 HQ2 finalists, which does include Toronto.

Last week, Seattle-based Kenmore Air and Vancouver's Harbour Air began offering seaplane flights aimed at providing a shorter commute alternative for neighbors who are increasingly doing business together.

However, the new office is expected to bring another 1,000 workers to the city by 2020. Microsoft kicked in $50,000 to the that study, and the British Columbia government added $300,000 as well.
