Almost 1,500 residents were ordered to evacuate from their volcano-side homes on Hawaii's Big Island after the Kilauea Volcanoerupted, sending molten lava to chew its way through forest land and bubble up on paved streets.
Earlier volcanic activity Monday caused a series of earthquakes on Hawaii's Big Island before Kilauea's eruption Thursday. Lava was confirmed at the edge of the Leilani Estates subdivision at around 5 p.m. Thursday, CNN reported. "Then we saw some lava popping out".
"It sounded like if you were to put a bunch of rocks into a dryer and turn it on as high as you could". "You could hear the power it of it pushing out of the ground".
Leilani Estates-area resident Stephen Clapper said he heeded the evacuation order in large part because his 88-year-old mother was out of her portable oxygen supply, KHON reported. The subdivisions are located in the district of Puna, about 25 miles from Kilauea itself.
This footage, livestreamed by resident Maija Stenback, shows a glimpse of lava spewing from a vent. In total, thousands of people have been evacuated following the eruption, with Governor David Ige saying he activated military reservists from the National Guard to help with the evacuations. "You know what's going on; we have warning systems". Earlier on Thursday, a column of smoke and ash rose from the Kilauea volcano following a 5.0 magnitude quake that rattled the island.

"I looked around and asked myself 'What's valuable?,'" he told the newspaper. "I am, not my island".
A shield volcano the Hawaiian islands, Kilauea is the most active of the state's volcanoes. But geologists said the current seismic activities around Puna most closely resemble the events that precipitated a 1955 eruption, according to Hawaii News Now. The homes at risk are in a subdivision near the town of Pahoa. "Lava did not travel more than a few m (yards) from the fissure".
The USGS also reported that although the flows are no longer active, there remain concerns about sulfur dioxide, and sulfur gas has been observed in the area near the fissure.
Officials couldn't predict how long Thursday's eruption may last.
Exposure to sulfur dioxide can be life threatening and high levels of the toxic gas have been detected. They feared they might lose the house.
"This stuff could go on for a couple days, weeks or months", Stenback said.
"I ran in, grabbed the dogs, put them in a crate, put them in the auto, went in my room, just grabbed an armload of clothes", he said, according to KHON.
