Geologists say Kilauea volcano could soon explode

Hawaii's governor is asking President Donald Trump to declare the state a disaster because of earthquakes and a volcanic eruption on the Big Island.

Ige wrote that millions of dollars are now needed to protect residents who have been threatened by "lava intrusion and the accompanying earthquakes and gas emissions".

Officials say these costs do not include permanent work or damages incurred from the earthquakes, and costs will skyrocket should large-scale air and sea evacuations become necessary. However, cracks in the ground are releasing steam.

Experts say that no new fissures have opened during the last 24 hours. "A mass evacuation of the lower Puna District would be beyond current county and state capabilities, and would quickly overwhelm our collective resources", Ige said in a statement announcing his request.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's decision to close Friday due to the risk of an explosive eruption will discourage travelers, said Janet Coney, the office manager at Kilauea Lodge, an inn in Volcano.

A large explosion in Kilauea sent up a column of ash on Wednesday which blew to the south-southwest.

Nobody lives within the quick space of the summit.

Everyone has been looking at Kilauea volcano's lava flows.

Active eruption of lava from fissures some 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) east of the summit has paused.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige said a geothermal energy plant near the lava outbreak was accelerating its removal of stored flammable gas as a precaution.

Plant manager Mike Kaleikini said Thursday that all the fuel was moved off-site to a secure location. Communities about 2 miles away could showered by pea-size rock fragments or dusted with nontoxic ash, said Tina Neal, scientist-in-charge at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory. Fifteen vents are now spread through the Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens neighborhoods. New warnings about flying ballistic blocks and sinking lava lakes help us remember!

The Puna Geothermal Venture plant has about 50,000 gallons of pentane.

The plant, which is owned by Ormat Technologies of Reno, Nevada, is across a highway from where lava has been erupting.

If anyone is asked to picture what a volcanic eruption looks like, most would likely paint a picture where a rock formation with steep sides that taper to a cone spew smoke and debris while lava flows down its slopes. Some two dozen homes have burned.

A summit explosion could also release ash, steam and sulfur dioxide gas.

Two subdivisions were evacuated last week after lava oozed out of the fissures.

Park officials say they fear a once-in-a-century steam explosion inside of Halemaumau Crater.

"At this time, we cannot say with certainty that explosive activity will occur, how large the explosions could be, or how long such explosive activity could continue", the report added.

Conda said that at a meeting Thursday night, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist Steve Brantley told residents that lava that has lain dormant in the area since a 1955 eruption was being forced to the surface by Kilauea's activity.
