An Amazon Echo Recorded A Conversation, Then Sent It As A Message

  • Alexa can misinterpret conversation as a wake-up call and command

A private conversation of a couple in the United States was recorded by Alexa and then sent to a random person in their contact list.

She said the incident happened two weeks ago when the employee called them to say she'd received a unusual voice recording of them.

News broke out earlier this week that Amazon's Alexa assistant recorded a private conversation between two people and then sent that recording to a third party. According to Amazon, Alexa had asked for a confirmation of the contact name to which the recording was sent, and it interpreted the background sound as a yes.

"We are evaluating options to make this case even less likely".

"I felt invaded", she told KIRO-TV.

Amazon's Alexa voice interface is in hot water after a U.S. family claimed a private conversation was recorded and forwarded by the Echo platform. At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customers contact list.

Amazon and Google say their speakers are created to record audio only when activated with a trigger word, such as "Alexa" or "Hey Google".

Chief financial officer Nick Read, 53, has been promoted to the top job, having been groomed as the preferred internal candidate. Margherita Della Valle, VOD's Deputy CFO, will take over as CFO on July 27, 2018.

In a more detailed explanation of what could have provoked the 'glitch, ' the company told TechCrunch that Alexa, which is supposed to be activated upon hearing its 'name, ' had most likely mistaken some of the words in the conversation for an eerily coincidental string of commands. "Immediately I said, 'I'm never plugging that device in again, because I can't trust it'".

Danielle and her husband were talking together at home when a colleague of her husband phoned up to warn them that their Alexa device had been hacked.

While the family is seeking a full refund, Amazon has reportedly only offered to "de-provision" their Alexa communications.

This could mean that as a human listens to music, the voice assistant may hear an instruction to send a message, or add a product to a shopping list. This was a conversation Danielle didn't know was being recorded.

The family had an Echo in every room and was using them to control their lights and appliances.

"Amazon takes privacy very seriously".

Amazon has described the event as an "extremely rare occurrence". We're told that you can "rest assured you'll always pick up right where you left off when switching between Alexa and the Audible app", and that with the "Whispersync for Voice" feature, "you can also switch between reading and listening with over 30,000 compatible audiobooks in the Kindle app". But if you want to make sure this doesn't happen to you, then simply avoid sending any kind of messages over Alexa.
