The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights later claimed that nine Russian soldiers alongside at least 26 Syrian army troopers had been killed in the Wednesday attack.

According to the ministry, the fight in the Syrian province of Deir-ez-Zor happened in the dark.

At least four Russian servicemen were killed in Syria after they were shelled by militants, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on Sunday.

According to AFP, the Russian statement raised the official count of soldiers killed in Syria to 92.

On May 23, the same day the attack reportedly took place, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman General Sergey Rudskoy held a briefing in Moscow on the situation in Syria.

The remaining 26 were all Syrian troops, he told AFP. Five others were wounded, two of whom died in a Russian military hospital, and 43 insurgents were killed in the nighttime battle.
