Microsoft is buying code-sharing site GitHub, say reports

More than 28 million developers already collaborate on GitHub, and it is home to more than 85 million code repositories used by people in almost every country.

Bloomberg, which had earlier reported a deal would be announced, had noted that Github was last valued in 2015 at $2bn. Microsoft might pay upwards of $5 billion for the company. The price of the acquisition was $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock.

Now Bloomberg reports that the companies have come to an agreement, and the purchase is now a done deal, and may be announced as soon as tomorrow.

In March, the chief executive, Nadella, finished the reorganisation, axing the Windows division entirely and splitting its responsibilities between a consumer-focused group, led by a former Microsoft Office head, and a developer-focused one, led by the company's cloud and enterprise chief.

Bloomberg said GitHub has been searching for a new chief executive officer for the past nine months and is now unprofitable.

This is not the first time that talks of Microsoft taking over GitHub has emerged, as on-and-off conversations regarding acquisition have been happening over the years. As Nadella increasingly moves the company away from complete dependence on the Windows operating system to more in-house development on Linux, the company needs new ways to connect with the broader developer community. GitHub has also not responded to media inquiries to the potential acquisition. GitHub allegedly hosts over 80 million code repositories and 27 million developer accounts. Other coders are then able to tinker with and improve the code.

There have always been rumors that Microsoft has an interest in buying GitHub, but in recent weeks it seems that talks between the two companies have been getting more serious. Its also donated numerous software to the open-source community, including Visual Studio Code, PowerShell and the Microsoft Edge JavaScript Engine. SiliconANGLE's own co-CEO John Furrier mused that GitHub is in a sense LinkedIn for developers, so there's a logical fit even beyond the code repository itself. If it's not making money, some bigger company will have to buy it to keep it afloat.
