Amazon Scores U.K. Premier League Soccer Rights Deal

  • Amazon Prime Premier League live stream BT Sky

Amazon will show 20 Premier League matches a season for three years from 2019, after winning one of the final two broadcast packages.

The deal means Amazon with exclusively stream 10 matches over one Bank Holiday of Premier League games during the festive period as well as a further ten during a midweek slot which will be early in December.

The 20 additional matches will cost the telco £90m, bringing the total cost for 52 games to £975 million over three years.

It has always been rumoured that an Internet giant would get in on the Premier League action, breaking the recent monopoly of BT Sport and Sky Sports, and now Amazon has stepped up to the plate.

The Premier League had introduced two new packages of live fixtures that included matches played simultaneously which would particularly appeal to an online streaming group.

In addition to live action, there will also be weekly highlights of all Premier League games throughout the season, although it has not been announced when that will be broadcast.

Amazon Prime, which includes free delivery on purchases as well as music and video content, costs 79 pounds ($106) a year in Britain.

Amazon, which started as an online retailer, has built up an increasingly impressive sports portfolio and broadcasts the US Open tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events - where they outbid Sky by offering £50 million - and National Football League games.

The revenue from British rights is not distributed entirely on an equal basis with clubs given more according to league position and also the amount of times they feature on live broadcasts.

It does similar with some live sporting events in the US.

Scudamore will be delighted with the entry of Amazon as it was his idea to lure either them or their rivals such as Facebook and YouTube into bidding for the rights.

The rivalry between Sky and BT in recent years has resulted in huge price inflation of 70% at each of the past two auctions.

However, analysts said they probably did not sell in February because they did not achieve the reserve price set by the Premier League.

The deal is an important milestone for Amazon, but it represents only a fraction of the larger Premier League pie.

On a busy day of announcements at the Premier League's summer meeting, it was also confirmed that the "big six" clubs have won their fight to take a bigger share of the top tier's booming global broadcasting revenue.

There is an expectation that Premier Sports may now look to do a deal with one of the major television providers to ensure the games they have the rights to attract the biggest possible audience, with the shake-up in television rights also affecting the United Kingdom market.
