  • Anti-U.S. consumer boycott? Canadians may find it hard to pull off

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he fully supports Donald Trump's efforts to get North Korea to relinquish its nuclear arsenal, but he won't respond to the US president's latest barbs directed at Canada. "The problem was that in conveying that message, I used language that was inappropriate", he said. "I own that; that was my mistake, my words".

Trump took time at his news conference to explain a photo that went viral from the G7 summit.

Mr. Trump responded to Mr. Trudeau on Twitter by calling him "dishonest" and "weak," and the president's surrogates subsequently amplified the attack during media appearances over the weekend.

Leaving the Group of Seven Summit for Singapore, President Trump tweeted that he has instructed USA representatives to not endorse a joint communique issued by the G-7 leaders. In tweets, Trump insulted Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak".

At the news conference, Trudeau called the USA steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and stated that Canada would go ahead with retaliatory tariffs on July 1 unless the American duties were dropped.

Larry Kudlow, a former CNBC commentator who is now Trump's top economic adviser, said Trudeau had engaged in "betrayal" of the U.S.

On Tuesday, Mr Trump kept up the attack on Mr Trudeau.

"Canada is very clear", Freeland said.

China warns U.S. sanctions will void trade talks
Ross and the large American delegation had dinner Saturday evening with their Chinese hosts. Liu's delegation included China's central bank governor and commerce minister.

Mr. Trudeau especially objected to the Trump administration's justification of the tariffs, saying Ottawa isn't a national security threat to Washington. "The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president".

"We're being taken advantage of on trade", Trump said.

Trump had made similar remarks late Saturday, accusing the Canadian leader of acting "meek and mild" during talks, before ther press conference.

"And I see the television and he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States and I say push him around?".

He said Trump agreed with the fairly generic trade language in the communique drafted by the G7 leaders, who are traditionally America's closet allies.

Trump said he was retaliating against Canada with countervailing tariffs, saying of Trudeau: "He learned that's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada". When you use it with your best friend, your next door neighbor, your greatest ally, and I think one of your singular best trading partners, it's completely uncalled for, unprofessional, and I call for, today, an apology. The president ruffled feathers at the G7 summit, not backing down from stiff tariffs on aluminum and steel imports. Trudeau had used similar language in the past, and Canada threatened retaliatory tariffs before the G-7 got underway in response to the US duties on metal.
