  • Phil Mickelson makes the cut but not the way you would expect

Phil Mickelson reacts to his putt on the third hole during the third round of the U.S. Open Golf Championship, Saturday, June 16, 2018, in Southampton, N.Y. His fourth shot onto the putting surface came to rest 18 feet from the hole, and when his attempt at a bogey putt ran past the hole, Mickelson rushed over and hit his ball a second time before it came to rest.

As he's still on the golf course at the time of this writing, Mickelson hasn't yet spoken on the matter but word from the FOX broadcast is that he took the penalty on goal in protest of the pin placements and the setup in general, a setup that he actually said he enjoyed earlier in the week. He would go on to finish the round and sit at 17 over for the week after posting an 11-over 81 on Saturday, matching his worst round ever at a U.S. Open.

Afterwards, Mickelson - who is now on +17 after three rounds at Shinnecock Hills - says he has long wanted to give up on a hole by hitting a moving ball. "I just finally did".

Mickelson has finished runner-up at the US Open on six occasions.

Do you think Mickelson should have been punished further?

Another player who let things get to him was Kirk Triplett in 1998 at Olympic Club.

The start of that sequence was for bogey on the par-four 13th. I took the two-shot penalty and moved on.

Doing so is a breach of Rule 14.5 which prohibits a player from hitting a moving ball.

But it's nothing disrespectful to me or to the U.S. Open or anything.

"No question it was going to go down into the same spot behind the bunker and I wasn't going to have a shot".

Instead, in a surprising post-round interview, the American claimed that his decision to putt his moving ball back up the green was indeed a deliberate action.

Allen reports that the USGA are satisfied with levying a two stroke penalty.
