Phil Mickelson goes bonkers with his putter at the US Open

  • Phil Mickelson appeared to have a rush of blood as he hit a still moving putt Saturday

Phil Mickelson says he was happy to take a two-shot penalty when he bizarrely chose to putt a moving ball on the 13 hole at the US Open on Saturday.

Phil Mickelson became the talk of tonight's round in the US Open when sanctioned for putting a moving ball.

With rounds of 77-69-81, Mickelson finished 54 holes at 17 over par and is tied for 64th. I have had multiple times where I've wanted to do that.

Shinnecock Hills has been ripping apart the world's best players all week and it all must have just gotten to Mickelson.

Phil Mickelson turned 48 on Saturday, an occasion marked by fans singing "Happy Birthday" at every turn.

According to the body, it was not relevant to apply golf rule 1-2 which says a player "must not take an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play".

Mickelson was having a miserable time before reaching 13. In that situation, I was just going back and forth. He was crucified for hitting the ball while it was moving, but he might have made the smart play.

Mickelson and playing partner Andrew Johnston were laughing about the incident as they walked off the green and Mickelson added: "How can you not laugh?" "That's where we clarified that 'Phil, you make a stroke at a moving ball, so we have to apply that rule'".

Cristiano Ronaldo's desire to leave Real Madrid is "irreversible", say reports
Similar reports of Ronaldo leaving Real had emerged past year as well after the Spanish club beat Juventus 4-1 in the final. But Marcelo insists the Portuguese does not have any say in transfers and has welcomed his Brazil team-mate to the club.

"I feel his pain, because everyone was having hard on the course today, but there definitely was a better way to handle it", Mr. Lilly, of Bronxville, said, but agreeing that Mickelson should not have been ejected from the tournament.

Major champions Curtis Strange and Paul Azinger were equally astonished.

With his ball about to roll down the slope, Lefty ran to his ball ... as it was moving ... and just gave it a whack back towards the cup, obviously missing, and then just marked his ball like nothing had happened.

Asked if people would find his actions on No. 13 disrespectful, Mickelson said: "It's meant to take advantage of the rules as best as you can".

You can see the initial putt here. "I think he just snapped at how bad his speed was on that putt".

No, this was Mickelson's attempt to be the smartest guy in golf once again. "It was odd, no one ever has those thoughts, it just happens". I took the two shots and moved on.

"I feel like they've kept it on the correct side".
