"The ICC can confirm the match officials in the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka changed the ball and awarded 5 penalty runs to West Indies", the ICC tweeted.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has been charged with ball-tampering by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Sri Lanka Cricket advised the team to play "under protest", that team management said no players "engaged in any wrongdoing", and it would take all steps to defend any player charged with "any unwarranted allegation". The match referee Javagal Srinath was also seen having an animated discussion with the Sri Lankan team officials.

However, after deliberations Sri Lankans agreed to the change of ball and to continue playing.

The Sri Lanka skipper refused to lead his team onto the field for the start of day three after he was informed by umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar the home side had been awarded a five-run penalty due to concerns over the condition of the ball.

After the fiasco on day three, Sri Lanka Cricket released a statement in support of their players. The situation regarding the change of ball and the implied ball tampering is nowhere close to being resolved even as it is bright and sunny at Gros Islet.

David and Charles Koch have donated an estimated $680 million to doctors and research that seek to find a cure for cancer. He has also given $185 million in total donations to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his alma mater.

The Sri Lankan board sent out a statement defending its players.

Video evidence will be used in the hearing, which will also be attended by the match officials as well as members of the Sri Lanka team management.

The article 2.2.9 states: Any action (s) likely to alter the condition of the ball which were not specifically permitted under clause 41.3.2 may be regarded as "unfair".

Steve Smith, along with David Warner, was handed a one-year ban from both domestic and global cricket by Cricket Australia while batsman Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension for their involvement in the incident. "The Sri Lankans would have taken offence at that and would have made their case". The first and only time a match has been forfeited in the history of Test cricket was in 2006, after Pakistan were penalised five runs for ball tampering in the fourth Test against England at The Oval.

Shannon Gabriel claimed an early wicket in the Sri Lanka second innings when Kusal Perera fell to a catch by Dowrich in the penultimate over of the day before the tourists ended the day on 34-1.
