  • U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks to reporters at United Nations headquarters in a file

"For too long the human rights council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias", Haley said, adding that calls from the US for the council to reform have not been heeded.

"For too long, the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias", Haley said.

"The Human Rights Council has become an exercise in shameless hypocrisy - with numerous world's worst human rights abuses going ignored, and some of the world's most serious offenders sitting on the council itself", Pompeo said.

China has weighed in on the U.S.'s recently announced decision to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council, Reuters reported.

For that matter, what's the point of the United Nations, with the seven permanent members on the Security Council, with views as varied as Russia, China and the United States, having a veto right over everyone else.

She recounted a list of "good faith" efforts the USA took to reform the council.

The diplomat noted that Washington's decision had dealt a powerful blow to its reputation in terms of protecting human rights.

Human Rights Watch U.N. director Louis Charbonneau said the USA draft General Assembly resolution "could have backfired badly and the process could have been hijacked" by the countries seeking to undermine the Human Rights Council. It added that the US criticism of the council for failing to make changes advocated by Washington appears "cynical".

Washington's retreat - officially notified to the world body on Wednesday - is the latest USA rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Clark says the United States, a proponent of reform, can't achieve it from the outside looking in.

"It is bad news for everyone who cares about human rights", Slovenian President Borut Pahor said on the UNHRC floor in Geneva on Wednesday. "Should it become reformed, we would be happy to rejoin it", Haley said.

Haley has been the driving force behind withdrawing from the human rights body, unprecedented in the 12-year history of the council. The official wasn't authorized to comment publicly and insisted on anonymity.

Suc further praised the 47-member council as the "only intergovernmental body responding to human rights issues and situations worldwide".

I guess it comes down to degree but what's the point of having a three year rotation of countries on the council, regardless of the transgressions they're meant to be there to protect?

Haley and Pompeo stressed the decision had been made after a long year of efforts to shame the council into reform and to remove member states that themselves commit abuses.

Russia's United Nations mission responded in a statement that the USA had tried but failed to turn the Council into an "obedient instrument for advancing their interests and punishing the countries it dislikes".
