  • A Lump Moving Across a Woman's Face Was a Parasitic Worm Crawling Under Her Skin

An Oregon woman made headlines earlier this year when she yanked a worm from her inflamed eye, National Geographic reported.

We've all heard the urban legend about the woman with the spiders living in her face, but we've always been able to comfort ourselves with its falseness.

10 days after that, it traveled to her upper lip.

.

Once inside the host body, the larvae mature to a worm, making things weirder.

The worm turned out to be a relatively harmless parasite that she contracted from a mosquito bite.

In a series of selfies, the woman tracked the mysterious lump as it moved across her face.

The lumps had been there for about two weeks.

Russian woman said that the parasite traveled from the left eye to her upper lip.

Second Sheriff’s Deputy Dies Following Shooting In Kansas
A second sheriff's deputy has died after being shot while an inmate was being transported to a Kansas City jail. Jeff Colyer (R) was told of the shooting on Friday as he arrived for a forum in Kansas City.

The patient reportedly told physicians she'd traveled outside Moscow to rural Russian Federation, where she'd been the victim of a lot of mosquito bites.

Abby Beckley said she felt something in her left eye and, when she plucked up the courage to take a closer look, found the parasitic worm Thelazia gulosa wriggling about.

Fortunately, humans can not transfer this infection to other hosts, according to the CDC, and the parasite can not be transmitted from an infected human, to a mosquito, to another human.

Usually, the physical damage is minimal and pulling the worm out does the trick. Dirofilaria repens typically infests dogs and other carnivores and finds itself unable to breed when a human becomes the unlucky host through the bite of a mosquito, typically in parts of Europe and Asia.

His research showed that between June 1997 and June 2013, almost 1,300 cases of dirofilariasis were found in Russian Federation and Belarus, usually among women who visited rural areas-which is how the unnamed woman in this case study is thought to have contracted the infection.

That said, the parasites usually die in the skin and are easily removed.

But according to the report in Parasites & Vectors, if continues to spread, it's possible that it could be introduced in the United States by infected dogs who come into the country. In a 2009 case report, one strain of the parasite even caused meningoencephalitis, or inflammation of the brain and its surrounding membranes.

It is unclear where the woman picked up the worm, but she did report having been in a town outside of Moscow, where she was frequently bitten by mosquitoes.
