  • World Cup 2018 Saudi Arabia Egypt Play For Pride In Group A Dead Rubber

Egypt keeper Essam El Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history when his side lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia on Monday.

That changed in the 41st minute when the Asian side were awarded a penalty for Ahmed Fathy's handball.

A lengthy VAR review upheld the initial call, and El Hadary was beaten this time by Salman Al Faraj, making the score 1-1 going into halftime.

Egypt ended their World Cup campaign without a single point in three games, as they struggled to match the quality of their group rivals.

Saudi Arabia enters the match in Volgograd having yet to score in the competition after a 5-0 loss to Russian Federation and a 1-0 setback vs. Uruguay.

This is the first time Egypt has qualified for the Cup since 1990, so it's especially thrilling for a player like El-Hadary, who made his professional debut in 1993 and first played for the national team in 1997 against Algeria.

In their first game against Uruguay, Egypt lacked the injured Salah's quality on the ball and his lack of match fitness showed against Russian Federation despite the goal.

Mohamed Salah gave Egypt the lead in the 22nd minute with a delightful lob over the goalkeeper.

As the game entered the final quarter, Housain Al-Mogahwi was given the chance to score his first global goal at the back post but the midfielder's header was tipped over the crossbar by El-Hadary.

"There is not much between our three goalkeepers but he was the right person to play today", said Cuper.

However, in the fifth minute of second-half injury-time, Al-Dawsari popped up in the box to volley past El-Hadary with the last kick of the match to secure a famous Saudi win.

Uruguay sealed top spot in World Cup Group A with a 3-0 win over 10-man Russian Federation at the Samara Arena this afternoon.

36% of Saudi Arabia's goals at the World Cup have been scored from the penalty spot (4 of 11).

But the Liverpool man should be backed to end the tournament on a high and follow on from his club form, putting Saudi Arabia to the sword.

Always available for the ball, the 28-year-old dictated the game for Pizzi's side with his penetrative passing and accurate crossing.
