  • Jimmy Fallon received backlash for the light-hearted conversation and for playfully mussing Donald Trump's hair in 2016

One day after Trump slammed the three hosts during a campaign rally supporting South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, the trio appropriated the insults the president hurled to mock him in return.

It's not the first time Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert have butted heads with Donald Trump. "If I couldn't I'd be in big trouble ... they're not talented people".

In a taped segment that opened both Stephen Colbert's The Late Show and Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Colbert and Fallon were seen responding to his recent slights.

He pens a quick joke about Trump before a video call from Fallon comes in. Colbert responds, "Hey, lost soul". "What are you up to?" "I can laugh at myself", the president, 72, insisted at the time.

"Be a man", Colbert advised, also parroting Trump's words. It led to Trump calling out Fallon on Twitter, to which "The Tonight Show" host responded with a donation in Trump's name to a Texas charity providing legal services to immigrants.

President Trump threatens 20 percent tariff on European cars
That list includes roughly 160 products such as United States sunbeds, paper towels, corduroy trousers and porcelain tableware. Canada said its tariffs of up to 25% on almost $13 billion of American products will take effect on July 1.

Fallon has faced criticism over a 2016 interview with Trump in which he messed up the then presidential candidate's hair. "Well, that's not right", Stephen said. "Because now he's gonna lose all of us", Trump said. "That's Conan", Colbert said, before placing a call to O'Brien. O'Brien was not mentioned by the president during the rally at Airport High School. "This guy on CBS has no talent", Trump said, referring to Colbert. "The real estate guy who sells steaks?" he asks in disbelief. "He's president? Wow. How's he doing?"

"Not so good", Colbert replies. "He called & said 'monster ratings.' Be a man Jimmy!"

"Remember, be civil!" O'Brien insists. "If we're not careful this thing could start to get ugly".

"What do you want to eat?"

At the end of the skit, Fallon and Colbert make lunch plans at the Red Hen - the Georgia eatery which last week told White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave.
