Lakers, LeBron James, and the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes

  • Reports: Danny Green opts into contract with San Antonio Spurs

The Lakers legend stated that he would be "very excited" if his team is able to sign both LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard this summer via free agency and trade respectively. Leonard has been the subject of trade rumors for a while, but things have kicked into high gear recently after the All-Star forward earlier this month reportedly expressed a desire to be traded.

San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green has exercised the $10 million player option on his contract and will return to the team next season, league sources told ESPN.

The Lakers believe that landing Leonard could help them attract free agents like LeBron James and Paul George this offseason.

That certainly plays in favor of the Lakers, as Leonard has stated that's where he wants to play. Many believe that they will join forces in Los Angeles, but there is a growing belief around the National Basketball Association that George might end up staying with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and if that does happen, could change James decision.

Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram have been featured most prominently in any suggested trade proposals with the Spurs.

The Lakers are reportedly trying to acquire a future first-round pick that could be combined with some of their young assets to entice the Spurs in further negotiations. The Lakers could even acquire a future first-rounder from a team that's looking to unload salary for the 2018-2019 season, and that draft pick could be used in a deal for Leonard, according to ESPN.

Another layer is the Spurs' pace at which they may look to trade the 26-year-old.

Per ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski, Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne, the Spurs have had trade discussions with the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and LA Clippers.

We know the Celtics made San Antonio an offer in February at the deadline.
