It has been confirmed that legendary midfielder Andres Iniesta has retired from Spanish worldwide duty.

The midfield maestro, who is also leaving Barcelona to play for Japanese club Vissel Kobe next season, scored 13 worldwide goals in his career, most notably the victor in extra time of the 2010 World Cup final.

Iniesta said he had no complaints about being left on the bench by coach Fernando Hierro, before being brought on during the second half.

The 34-year-old announced he had played his last game for his country following his country's shock penalty-shootout defeat in Moscow, adding: "Sometimes, the end is not as you dreamed it".

'This was my last game for Spain, ' Iniesta told reporters. A marvellous spell is over. "It's a hard moment, one we have been through on various occasions - we weren't capable of going that little bit extra".

Januzaj stunner sees Belgium beat England to top spot
If that is tied, then the victor will be decided by a coin toss. It's been a unusual end to an absorbing World Cup group stage. So did Romelu Lukaku , who has scored four for Belgium .

"On a personal level, it wasn't my dream farewell, but these things happen in life".

There was another shock in the World Cup as Spain crashed out of the competition against Russian Federation.

And the hosts punished Spain as Artyom Dzyuba converted from the penalty spot.

There have been 48 Spanish players who have scored on the biggest stage for the national team and it's David Villa who has found the net the most with his tally of nine goals from 2006 to 2014.

Russian Federation is staging its first-ever FIFA World Cup, which kicked off in Moscow with a spectacular opening show at the Luzhniki Stadium on the night of June 14.
