  • Armed, barricaded suspect may be former NBA, UCLA basketball star: report

Family members identified Honeycutt on Saturday, after reports that the man had been a former basketball player for both UCLA and the NBA, according to ABC 7.

When police arrived, Honeycutt allegedly shot at the officers, who shot back.

According to the LAPD, police responded to a call about a man with a gun in the neighborhood of Sherman Oaks, located by Riverside Drive and Tyrone Avenue, around 5 p.m. on July 6. Police evacuated the immediate area before a SWAT team entered the residence early morning Saturday where they found the man dead, the LAPD said on Twitter Saturday. When police showed up at the residence, the suspect opened fire at the officers, and the officers returned fire.

United States media report this was Honeycutt's residence in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles.

Tyler Honeycutt once had a bright future as a budding star at UCLA, but it never really translated into the National Basketball Association. LAPD later announced Honeycutt had died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, so police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team, according to Officer Jeff Lee with the Department's Media Relations Section.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man.

"Investigators from our Force Investigation Division are at scene conducting a thorough investigation and we will provide more details as they become available", the tweet said. He was 27 years old. The Sacramento Kings drafted him with the 35th pick in the 2011 draft. He also spent a year playing for Anadolu Efes, a Turkish squad, before returning to Khimki in 2017.
