Syrian army units took control of a roughly 50-kilometer stretch of the Syrian-Jordanian border from opposition forces on Sunday, the latest step in a Russian-negotiated settlement for the Syrian government to retake control of the majority of the country's southwest.

Government forces will continue to advance at the Nassib border crossing as part of its strategy to fight the rebels, AMN reported.

Pro-government forces are also set to withdraw from much of Daraa's eastern countryside under the agreement, pulling back from recently captured territory and allowing newly formed rebel security forces to re-enter and oversee the reconciliation process.

The agreement is expected to be implemented in stages, rebel spokesman Hussein Abazeed said, first for eastern Daraa, the provincial capital and then the west of the province.

The presence of Russian military police is key to the agreement and the assurances given to rebels and civilians.

"More than 320,000 people are now displaced and most are living in dire and insecure conditions, including some 60,000 people camped at the Nasib/Jaber border crossing with Jordan", he said.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 6, the joint opposition operations room for southern Syria said rebels agreed to a deal that includes their "gradual" surrender of heavy and medium weapons.

Opposition sources told dpa that the deal would allow civilians to return to their villages and towns, with Moscow securing their safety and protection.

Other than the war of flags at the crossing, soldiers there seemed happy and relaxed, as the progress made in Daraa is of great importance to the Syrian government.

"What is happening in southern Syria is a big achievement for the Syrian army and its allies and a resounding defeat for America, Israel and their allies", said an official of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia, Ali Daamoush, during a Friday prayers sermon in Beirut.

"No one knows what's happening-it's in God's hands", he added.

Jordan had placed some of its medical staff in the area near the duty free zone to treat injured Syrians after Amman refused to give permission for refugees to enter its territories.

Both Damascus and Moscow have repeatedly denied the accusations.

The deputy ambassador to the UN, Jonathan Cohen, said last week that Washington was "deeply concerned" by the Syrian regime's new offensive.

Commenting on the negotiations, Jumana Ghunaimat, spokeswoman for the Jordanian government, told Al Jazeera: "The solution in Syria is political, not military".

He said that while the United Nations and partners are doing what they can to deliver life-saving aid to the people of south-west Syria - both from within the country and across the Jordanian border - the security situation is hindering efforts to reach many people in dire need.

Reuters Television footage showed a long convoy of tanks and vehicles, carrying hundreds of forces and Syrian state flags, that appeared to be heading for western Deraa province, where insurgents still hold several towns.
