  • Workers open a coffin containing three mummies was discovered in Alexandria Egypt

Photos released Thursday evening by Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities show a team of archaeologists climbing down the 16-foot-deep (5 meter) pit and wedging the black sarcophagus open with a wooden plank.

Instead, Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities said, the sarcophagus contained what mummification experts believe to be the remains of three military soldiers or officers.

Waziri stressed that none of the three mummies belong to a Ptolemaic or Roman royal family and the coffin does not have inscriptions or a cartouche bearing their names.

The cracking open of an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus did not lead to the discovery of Alexander the Great's remains, nor did it unleash an ancient curse.

"We found the bones of three people, in what looks like a family burial".

David Milner, editor at Gamer Informer Australia, tweeted: "As a fan of Brendan Fraser's "The Mummy", I say don't open the cursed sarcophagus".

Some observers thought it may contain the corpse of Alexander the Great, as the sarcophagus dates back to the early Ptolemaic period, or around 323 B.C., which began following Alexander's death.

The skeletons discovered inside the coffin will be transferred to the Alexandria National Museum for restoration, the Ministry of Antiquity said on its website. Many people also said that it must have been the tomb of some important person, who lived between 323BC and 30BC, as granite was not used for any average person in those days.

When a black granite sarcophagus was found at the bottom of a pit in Alexandria, Egypt, this past week, the discovery immediately prompted questions and theories ranging from the sensible to the supernatural.

Waziri added that the sarcophagus is unusual for its size; it's the largest to ever be discovered in Alexandria.

"The sarcophagus has been opened, but we have not been hit by a curse", Waziri declared, directly addressing internet memes that suggested that the mysterious black box was filled with a Hollywood-style calamity. "I was the first to put my whole head inside the sarcophagus ... and here I stand before you".
