Sweden's U.N. Ambassador Olof Skoog, the current council president, told reporters Wednesday that September's meeting of world leaders at U.N. headquarters in NY "would be an extremely useful timeline" for the committee to be formed "to show that there is now a political momentum".

"We got reinforcements from (security) forces near and far, God grant them peace", he said.

Iran has become so entrenched in Syria that neither Russian Federation nor the Assad regime likely have the desire or ability.

At least 270,000 people fled their homes in the region as the fighting continued, the United Nations said.

It said dozens of IS militants were also killed in the clashes.

Mizintsev said no refugees should be sent back to Syria unwillingly.

Describing a chaotic scene, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says pro-regime militants and armed villagers also clashed with ISIS fighters in and around Sweida - whose attacks were apparently timed to coincide with the bombings this morning.

The Observatory said government forces had forced the jihadists from all the villages they had stormed from their pocket northeast of the city.

Al-Ikhbariya said one of the attackers hit at a vegetable market in the city of Sweida just after 5 a.m., a busy time for the merchants at the start of their day.

Deadly suicide attack hits Syrian city of Sweida

The suicide blasts and raids killed 156 people including 62 civilians, the Observatory said.

At least 32 people including several civilians have died in a string of Islamic State group suicide attacks against a regime-held area of southern Syria, a war monitor said today.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that the Islamic State terror group had claimed responsibility for the terror attacks.

He said 26 pro-government fighters had been killed and more than 30 people wounded in the attack on populated areas close to Sweida city.

The province's governor, Amer al-Eshi, told state-run Ikhbariyah TV that Sweida had been secured by Wednesday afternoon.

The suicide bombings came in tandem with attacks by the IS militants on towns in the northeastern countryside of Sweida after dawn Wednesday.

The area taken from Islamic State fighters is located near the Golan Heights.

Sweida has largely escaped the violence that has engulfed most of Syria during the brutal seven-year civil war, but is now being dragged into the intense fighting of a government campaign to recapture neighbouring Deraa province from rebel and jihadi forces.
