'I don't know when he made a decision to do this, but I'm very familiar with how this murder was committed and there was a lot of planning that went into this, ' Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a press conference on Wednesday. He remains at large and is armed with several weapons, police said.

Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference Wednesday that the suspect, Joseph James Pappas, 65, should be considered armed and unsafe.

"This man is unsafe, this man is capable, this man has some skills (with firearms)", he said.

"We are relieved that the Houston Police Department has identified the suspect and are confident he will be apprehended soon".

Acevedo said Pappas hadn't been seen in 36 to 48 hours.

A man suspected of killing one of former President George H.W. Bush's doctors may have been seeking revenge for his mother, who died on the doctor's operating table more than 20 years ago, authorities said Wednesday.

Pappas' mother died more than two decades ago during surgery performed by Hausknecht, according to police Chief Art Acevedo. "There was a lot of planning and sadly some skill".

Once police had been told that Pappas said he meant to kill himself, Houston officers were sent to check on him at his home on Tuesday night. Former FBI special agent Dennis Franks said the fact he allegedly acted on a 20-year grudge could say something about who Pappas is.

Demi Lovato: 'How Demi has helped me' stories shared by fans
U.S. singer Demi Lovato is awake and surrounded by her family after she was reportedly taken to hospital in Los Angeles . The former Disney star and her family have been open about their struggles with mental health and addiction in the past.

"So it appears that this might be a 20-year-old grudge", Acevedo said.

An arrest warrant was issued for Pappas who police say may still have his 10-speed bicycle.

Mr Pappas worked for roughly 30 years as an armed law enforcement officer. He is considered armed and risky, and police believe he may be suicidal. Investigators said the alleged gunman rode closely behind the victim before firing at least three times, hitting Hausknecht, and then riding off into a nearby residential area.

Police visited the suspect's home on Tuesday and Wednesday but did not find him, police said.

"Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man", Bush said in a July statement.

Police went to Pappas' three-bedroom home in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday night but he was not there. "I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care".

Among those patients was former President George H.W. Bush, who appeared next to Hausknecht during a 2000 news conference at the hospital after being treated for an irregular heartbeat.
