A manatee in distress from exposure to red tide in southwest Florida was taken to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Wednesday.

Red tide blooms produce toxic chemicals that can affect both marine organisms and humans.

All we do know is that marine life is dying, and there are two different types of algae.

It is believed a combination of coastal pollution and nutrient-laden water being flushed into the warm waters of the gulf from Lake Okeechobee have caused the particularly severe red tide.

The city is issuing a daily "fish kill clean-up" report because of the "unprecedented volume of dead sea life now washing up".

WINK Meteorologist Matt Devitt posted on Facebook about some of the devastation. It's toxic, too: Reports of red tide first were reported in November 2017, and at least 400 stranded and dead sea turtles have been pulled from Lee, Collier, Charlotte and Sarasota county waters since, according to the Naples News-Press. "It's our entire south Florida coastline with the red tide and then with the blue-green algae on the rivers and canals".

Sea turtles, manatees, fish and other animals are seeing a spike in their mortality rate during 2018, especially in Southwest Florida.

Red tide, which refers to higher than normal algae blooms of the organism Karenia brevis, happens nearly annually and has been a natural occurrence for centuries.

For starters, blue-green algae is very noticeable.

"With this year's red tide being more substantial than previous years, we must do everything we can to help minimize its harm to our water and wildlife".

"It's certainly disgusting", said Amy Benton, who walked along the shoreline early Thursday with a scarf over her nose and mouth as protection.
