Gretchen Whitmer, a former leader in the MI state Senate, captured the Democratic nomination for governor Tuesday night and will face off against the state's Republican attorney general, Bill Schuette, in a race that looms as a pivotal test of whether Democrats can reclaim power in a state President Donald Trump won two years ago.
Three progressive candidates who had gotten Ocasio-Cortez's support did win Tuesday, including former MI state representative Rashida Tlaib, who won a six-candidate primary and will run unopposed in the general election. Debbie Stabenow, who is seeking a fourth term.
The Democratic candidate for governor is a former leader of the Senate Democrats, Gretchen Whitmer.
According to the unofficial results at press time from Ballotpedia, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Schuette won the Republican race with 494,297 votes, Whitmer edged out her Democratic competitors with 585,498 votes, and Libertarian candidate Gelineau received 3,503 votes.

"And I like to think that even though I'm not going to get the opportunity to serve, that we've ignited a belief in what is possible among young people who never before saw themselves in somebody running for office".
In the aftermath, Whitmer communications director Zack Pohl shared his frustration with a pre-election narrative that, he argued, understated his candidate's progressive record and offered simplistic assumptions about where the Democratic energy resides.
The GOP has controlled MI for 7 ½ years, and Democrats are eager to capitalize on what is typically rough sledding for the president's party in midterm elections and the state electorate's penchant for backing the opposite party when a governor leaves due to term limits.
Whitmer would not be Michigan's first female governor, nor has she made the anti-Trump resistance movement a centerpiece of her campaign, instead focusing on issues such as road repairs, school funding and water. As of last Thursday, the organization said it has 48,000 members.
