Singer Aretha Franklin, a multiple Grammy award-winner star whose legacy stretches back decades, is gravely ill and surrounded by relatives, a reporter and family friend wrote on his website Monday.

She also revealed it would be her a year ago performing live as she announced plans to retire.

She told Detroit's WDIV Local 4 TV station: "This will be my a year ago".

Her last performance was in November of last year, for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY, while a number of shows scheduled for this year were also cancelled under doctor's orders. "That wouldn't be good either".

A new report claims Aretha Franklin is in serious condition at a Detroit-area hospital.

Scoring her first top 40 single with Rock-a-Bye Your baby with a Dixie Melody while at Columbia, she achieved a modest level of success before moving to Atlantic Records in 1966.

"Franklin's hits include "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" (1968), "Day Dreaming" (1972), "Jump to It" (1982), "Freeway of Love" (1985), and "A Rose Is Still A Rose", (1998).

The legendary artist has had over 20 number one singles in the U.S. and won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance eight years in a row - from 1968 to 1975 and in 1987 she was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
