  • Back us not Brussels on Iran, US ambassador tells Theresa May as he warns British businesses will lose trade

Britain and its European allies responded with dismay to the USA president's decision in May to pull out of the 2015 deal which relieved sanctions on Tehran in return for an end to Iran's military nuclear ambitions.

Britain remained open to talks with the US on how to address concerns about Iran.

"We don't support the sanctions because they are a strategic error, but we will comply with them", said Abadi, whose country is an ally of both Tehran and Washington. "Sometimes you need to take a stand against friends".

Iran has denounced the sanctions as "U.S. unilateralism".

US Ambassador to Britain Woody Johnson criticized Tehran for funding "proxy wars and malign activities" instead of investing in its economy. She is struggling to quell rebellions within the ranks of her Conservative party over Brexit negotiations and she can't afford to alienate Brussels further by siding with Washington on the Iran nuclear deal, say analysts.

May's position is likely to become even more awkward in the coming days as she's forced to choose between European leaders, whose support she needs for a favorable Brexit deal or a USA leader determined to secure EU compliance with reimposed sanctions on Iran, fear British officials.

"It is time to move on from the flawed 2015 deal", he continued.
