At least 71 people have overdosed from synthetic marijuana in CT with at least 52 of them at or near a CT city park, authorities said late Wednesday.

The majority of people overdosed on suspected synthetic marijuana at the CT city park and another two people nearby fell ill with similar symptoms around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, officials said.

At one point, officials estimate that four to six people were dropping from overdoses at the same time and 25 of the overdoses happened within a three-hour stretch.

First responders scrambled all day Wednesday to handle almost 80 overdoses caused by what officials believe to be synthetic marijuana, which is commonly called K2. They are still awaiting toxicology tests to confirm the exact substance.

Lt. Ernest Jones, an emergency medical technician for the New Haven Fire Department, told the Register he's had his job for five years, and never had such an abnormal day at work.

Police believe the person responsible for the overdoses may have been given out free samples of the drug.

No deaths were reported, but at least two people suffered life-threatening symptoms.

The patients were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and St. Raphael's Hospital.

"There have been a couple individuals that were certainly more sicker than others", Fontana told reporters at a press conference Wednesday morning. Hawk said some people got better with the help of naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, while others didn't. Police said Wednesday afternoon that they had made an arrest in connection to the overdoses, WFSB reports.

So far, no deaths have been reported.

"We've heard from people on the green that it potentially included PCP".

At least one patient did not initially respond to Narcan - a drug used to reverse the effects of a narcotic overdose - but higher doses administered at the hospital over a period of time has resulted in improved conditions, said Yale EMS Medical Director Sandy Bogucki. "And after about the sixth one", Alston said.

"The substance behind these overdoses is highly unsafe and must be avoided", Malloy said, adding that state public health officials had delivered 50 doses of Naloxone to New Haven to replenish the supply expended by first responders over the course of the 24-hour crisis.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy tweeted that the emergency in New Haven was "deeply troubling and illustrative of the very real and serious threat that illicit street drugs pose to health of individuals".
