Westminster Station has been closed for entry and exit as police respond to the event.

The suspect is not believed to be known to MI5 or counter-terrorism police.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the UK's counter-terrorism chief said the arrested man was in his 20s, but yet to be formally identified.

The incident resulted in the closure of the Westminster Tube station and police remained on the scene to help with the investigation.

He is said not to be co-operating with officers and was not known to security services.

Three people were injured. A woman is being treated for serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The suspect arrested after following yesterday's Westminster terror attack has been named as Salih Khater.

Footage aired on BBC News showed the car's approach towards Parliament, where it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with cyclists before entering a small road and crashing into a security barrier.

Salih Khater, 29, was arrested by armed police from a silver Ford Fiesta that crashed into a security barrier after allegedly ploughing into cyclists and pedestrians.

"At this stage, we are treating this as a terrorist incident and the Met's Counter Terrorism Command is now leading the investigation", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Another witness, BBC employee Barry Williams, says he heard screams and then saw the vehicle plow into a group of cyclists waiting at a traffic light before accelerating toward the barrier. "We will issue further info when we have it", police said.

One man received treatment at the scene and two people were taken to hospital following the incident.

Several streets around nearby Parliament Square and Victoria Tower Gardens have been cordoned off. Masood abandoned his vehicle and then stabbed and killed a police officer before being shot dead in a courtyard outside Parliament.

"I couldn't see him doing anything stupid like that", said one neighbor, who only gave his name as Adam. "There was smoke coming out of the vehicle", he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. He killed four pedestrians and a policeman before he was shot dead.

The prime minister paid tribute to the "formidable courage" and professionalism of the emergency services who "ran towards a unsafe situation in order to protect the public".
