President Trump threatens Google over allegedly "rigged" search results

  • U.S President Donald Trump

In a tweet Tuesday, the president said search results for "Trump News" only return negative stories on the administration by the left-wing media.

Trump's accusation of bias on the part of Google comes as social media companies have suspended accounts, banned certain users and removed content as they face pressure from the U.S. Congress to police foreign propaganda and fake accounts aimed at disrupting American politics, including operations tied to Iran and Russian Federation. And if there aren't many conservative sources surfacing, which is not the case, that's likely because conservative media tends to publish false content.

According to Trump, "96% of results on "Trump News" are from National Left-Wing Media", which he describes as "very risky".

The search engine said it issues hundreds of improvements to its algorithms each year to ensure searches always yield "high-quality content in response to users' queries".

That 96 percent figure came directly from PJ Media's supervising editor, Paula Bolyard.

This story originally appeared in the New York Post.

"We'll let you know", Kudlow said.

In October 2016, Trump accused Google, Facebook and Twitter of burying the news that Hillary Clinton was being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation over her emails - branding them "very dishonest media".

Mercedes Bunz, a senior lecturer in digital technology at King's College London, told BBC News it was highly unlikely that Google was deliberately ranking news according to political bias. While search results can vary between users, observers were quick to point out Tuesday that the top result for many "Trump news" searches was an article from Fox News.

Google uses a complex algorithm to decide what results users are presented with, though its exact workings remain a closely guarded corporate secret.

Tech companies have said they do not remove content for political reasons.

The president - who has waged war against anything he believes is "fake news" and has branded the press "the enemy of the people" - claimed the search engine specialist was deliberately suppressing the voice of Conservative Amerca.
