  • Trump lawyer McGahn, Mueller cooperator, may leave White House

On Wednesday we learned that White House lawyer Don McGahn is leaving his post. Add Donald Trump as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Donald Trump news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

"McGahn was not aware that Trump planned to send the tweet before it posted, The Washington Post reported, citing a source".

Reporter Maggie Haberman, who first wrote on McGahn's meetings with Mueller for the New York Times, countered that notion in an August 18 tweet, saying the White House "didn't understand the extent" of McGahn's cooperation.

In recent months, as he has worked on the Kavanaugh confirmation, McGahn's challenges have only mounted.

McGahn threatened to resign past year if Trump removed special counsel Robert Mueller from the Russian election meddling investigation.

Mr. McGahn described the president's fury toward the Russian Federation investigation and the ways in which he urged Mr. McGahn to respond to it.

ABC News' Tara Palmeri and Katherine Faulders contributed reporting to this article.

Explainer: It will be tough for Trump's SEC to overhaul reporting rules
That can pressure executives to engage in reckless practices to hit quarterly targets or even to manipulate earnings reports. He also said he would find it challenging not to get information every quarter because so much can change in six months.

McGahn did not discuss the issue with Rosenstein and threatened to quit when Trump continued to insist that he do so, the person said.

Trump, who has repeatedly called the probe a "rigged witch hunt", said he had authorized his team to "fully cooperate" with investigators.

The announcement of his departure comes amid revelations McGahn extensively cooperated with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team probing Russia's attempted interference in the 2016 election. While Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell praised McGahn as "the most impressive White House Counsel during my time in Washington".

But there are rumours swirling of presidential dissatisfaction with the way Mr McGahn has handled the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation, including reported disputes over whether to fire Robert Mueller and when - or if - the president should pardon his former campaign chair, Paul Manafort.

McGahn serves a key role in the confirmation process, as demonstrated during the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch.

The Washington Post said in his interviews with Mr Mueller's team, which also is investigating potential obstruction of justice regarding the Russian meddling, Mr McGahn was asked about Mr Trump's actions in firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in 2017. His reaction was, "Of course it happened this way", one person said.
