  • Suspected meteorite hits ISS causes oxygen-leaking crack – but it's not a big deal

The next morning, the team probably woke up to some surprising (and slightly worrying) news, and all crew members went searching for the hole. As they searched for a solution, Dr Gerst, from the European Space Agency, is said to have plugged...

The leak was detected around 7 p.m. EDT by flight controllers in Houston and Moscow.

NASA says Soyuz commander Sergey Prokopyev used epoxy on a gauze wipe to plug the hole, while ground controllers used the reserves in the Progress 70 cargo ship to increase the amount of oxygen in the station.

Astronauts have patched a tiny hole that was allowing air to leak from the Russian side of the International Space Station.

Astronauts on board the International Space Station have managed to fix a tiny tear in the fabric of a Russian capsule that was letting oxygen leak into space.

Since the new vehicle NASA to send crew are still at the development stage, the United States of America can remain without direct access to the ISS. But flight controllers and the crew are trying to develop a more long-term fix.

Back to Earth the next expedition to the global space station in April 2019 will complete the program by sending on the Russian spacecraft to the ISS, American astronauts.

The space agency told its astronauts "no further action was contemplated for the remainder of the day". Flight control in Houston and Moscow identified the issue on Wednesday evening, but they decided the leak was minimal enough that they could let the crew sleep through it. "They travel at speeds up to 17,500 miles per hour, fast enough for a relatively small piece of orbital debris to damage a satellite or a spacecraft".

The Soyuz capsule that was leaking, one of the two at the station, arrived at the lab in June, carrying three astronauts.

The sources report that the damage to the Soyuz capsule was likely caused by a micrometeorite hitting the spacecraft and breaching through its wall.

Three ISS crewmembers are due to use that same Soyuz vehicle to return to Earth at the end of the year.
