Reynolds made scores of movies, ranging from lightweight fare such as the hits "The Cannonball Run" and "Smokey and the Bandit" to more serious films like "The Longest Yard" and "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing".

Us Weekly reports Reynolds died after suffering cardiac arrest at a Florida hospital on Thursday.

The moustachioed actor had undergone heart bypass surgery in 2010. The movie's infamous rape scene may have helped the public - especially men - better understand the horrors of sexual attacks, Reynolds said. He is survived by his son from his second marriage, Quinton Anderson Reynolds. The original The Longest Yard and Smokey and the Bandit are chief among such instances. For his efforts, the Academy nominated him for a Best Supporting Actor trophy. "I was interested in having a good time", Reynolds said in his 2015 memoir, "But Enough About Me" about his career.

Burton Leon Reynolds was born on February 11, 1936, in Lansing, Michigan, to parents Fern and Burton Milo Reynolds. Reynolds also generated attention for financial woes and his struggles with prescription pain medication. He also earned an Oscar nomination for his role as a porn director in 1997's Boogie Nights.

Celebrities reacted to news of the actor's death, sharing memories of Reynolds and appreciation for his body of work.

While attending Florida State, Reynolds roomed with one Lee Corso - the famed college football broadcaster who remains a staple of "College Gameday".

Reynolds inspired a wide range of responses over his long, erratic career: critical acclaim and critical scorn, commercial success and box office bombs. Burt made his Broadway debut in Look, We've Come Through, toured with the production, and began taking acting classes once he returned to NY.

He also said he turned down the part of Han Solo in Star Wars. And there's one thing they can never take away: "Nobody had more fun than I did".

An action star who did many of his own stunts, Reynolds was also a charismatic rogue and relentless flirt on-screen, helping to make one of the biggest sex symbols of his time.

Reynolds in 1972 starred alongside Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox in Deliverance, a film about four Atlanta businessmen and buddies who took a canoe trip on a remote Georgia river that went terribly wrong. "I think she was one of the most underrated actresses, you know?" he told ET.
