President Donald Trump is touting a show of faith from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as the loyalty of his aides comes into question in the wake of an anonymous New York Times op-ed that undermines his presidency.

"North Korea has been preemptively carrying out measures needed for denuclearisation, and Kim said he would appreciate that such good faith is accepted with good faith".

"He wanted to end some 70 years of animosity between North Korea and the United States and achieve denuclearization within President Trump's first term", South Korean National Security Office head Chung Eui-yong, who led the one-day trip to Pyongyang, told reporters Thursday in Seoul.

But the North Korean leader also expressed a "sense of frustration" with the worldwide community for not appreciating what he called Pyongyang's "very significant and meaningful" steps, Chung said. Chung said there was no discussion with Kim about rescheduling that trip.

"(The countries) agreed to discuss specific ways to built their mutual trust and prevent armed conflicts while continuing their ongoing talks on reducing military tension at the South-North Korean summit", Chung said.

Last week U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis had said joint drills with Seoul would no longer be suspended, following lack of progress on North Korea denuclearization.

The South Korean envoy's visit to Pyongyang came amid a deadlock on the North's atomic weapons, with United States efforts to dismantle the arsenal stalled for weeks. He and other South Korean envoys met Kim in Pyongyang on Wednesday.

Chung quoted Kim as saying that two-thirds of each tunnel at the Punggye-ri nuclear weapons testing site had collapsed, rendering the tunnels permanently unusable. The president added that he looked forward to seeing Kim again.

The North Korean leader also pledged to "achieve the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula in the first official term of President Trump", Mr Chung said.

In New Delhi Thursday, Secretary of State Pompeo, the former U.S. intelligence chief who heads the USA negotiating effort, struck a sober note, saying there is still much work to do.

Mr Chung also cited Mr Kim as saying that North Korea is unable to conduct any more nuclear tests, despite several reports that the regime is secretly continuing its nuclear programme.

Other North Korean officials and state-run media outlets have said negative things about a variety of other USA officials recently, prominently including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The primary sticking point at the moment is North Korea's desire to bring an official end to the Korean War.

"It is the case that there is still an enormous amount of work to do". The U.S. president gave Moon's envoys a message to deliver to Kim Jong Un, who gave the officials a statement to send to the White House.

The U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Thursday said it had no information to share on the matter.

North Korea has demanded that Washington agree to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, and accused it of failing to reciprocate "goodwill measures". Kim reportedly complained about the USA negotiating in bad faith and regretted the doubts raised about his commitment to peace.

But American officials and conservatives in the South are concerned such a declaration would weaken the US-South Korea alliance and deprive the 28,000 US forces stationed on the peninsula of their deployment rationale.
