Large protests had been expected, including the appearance of the "Trump baby" balloon that flew in London during the president's visit to the U.K.in July.

There were plans for Trump to spend one day in the capital before travelling to Doonbeg in County Clare where he owns a golf course.

Leo Varadkar confirmed the November visit was cancelled and said the "US side has cited scheduling reasons".

But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders later told reporters that no final decision had been made, suggesting the proposed visit could still yet happen.

The White House announced in August that Mr Trump would travel to Ireland as part of a trip to attend the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War One in Paris on 11 November.

It was to be his first visit to the country since becoming president in 2016.

Brendan Howlin, the leader of the Labour Party in the Republic of Ireland, said that Mr Trump was "no friend of democracy or human rights".
