  • 'We just don't want people to think this is over': North Carolina's governor gives a stark warning as Hurricane Florence continues ravaging the state

"We face walls of water at our coast, along our rivers, across farmland, in our cities and in our towns". Both Wilmington International Airport and Fort Macon suffered gusts of 105 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

All roadways in the state are at varying degrees of risk for flash flooding through Sunday, with major river flooding anticipated into early next week. Another person was arrested for allegedly looting an Exxon gas station and convenience store.

Most of the fatalities occurred in North Carolina, where officials confirmed eight victims.

In one piece of good news authorities said that 16 wild ponies of hurricane-struck Ocracoke Island, located off the North Carolina coast, were safe. The previous record of 24.06 inches was set during Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

He said the storm had killed at least five people, but there were fears that number could rise. These included I-40 on Wallace Road, and possible flooding on North Carolina highways 41 and 50. The governor's office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain.

On Friday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper called Florence an "uninvited brute who doesn't want to leave", warning it could wipe out entire communities as it grinds its way across land. Fourteen people are believed to have died in the storm. A woman in Hampstead, North Carolina died of a heart attack after first responders were unable to reach her fast enough due to downed trees. A man and woman died in Horry County due to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to SC officials.

Ex-hurricane Florence's top sustained winds have weakened to 80-kilometres-per-hour but it's projected to bring further catastrophic flash flooding.

A downed tree rests on a house during the passing of Hurricane Florence in the town of Wilson, North Carolina, on September 14, 2018. "Flood waters are rising, & if you aren't watching for them, you are risking life". The ships are expected to start their return on Sunday, the Navy said. This will cause devastating flooding across much of Onslow County with travel made impossible and many homes completely flooded. There have been "hundreds of rescues". That's because it can take a few days for the rivers to crest. People in nearby communities are being told to get to higher ground.

There is a mandatory evacuation order for the area, officials said.

Power outages exceeded 27,000 in the metro area by 3 a.m. Sunday, the paper added.

Charlotte and Asheville in North Carolina, and Roanoke, Virginia, could also be in for heavy rains as Florence plods inland.

The storm was expected to move across parts of southeastern North Carolina and eastern SC on Friday and Saturday, then head north over the western Carolinas and central Appalachian Mountains early next week, the NHC said.

The hurricane center said the storm will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a sharp rightward swing to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week.
