  • GOP troubles with women get worse after Trump defends Kavanaugh on sexual assault accusation

President Trump is standing by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after another round of allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior, this time from when Kavanaugh was a student at Yale.

Separately, Michael Avenatti, the lawyer best known for representing adult film star Stephanie Clifford, who says she had an affair with Donald Trump before he was elected president, said on Twitter that he represents a woman "with credible information regarding Judge Kavanaugh".

He has denied both accusations.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, called for the "immediate postponement" of any further action on Kavanaugh's nomination.

The accusation from Ramirez raises the stakes further for a dramatic showdown Thursday, as Kavanaugh and Ford testify in public about an incident she characterizes as attempted rape - and that he says simply never happened. Senate Republicans should stand up to these unsubstantiated and discredited allegations and move forward with a vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Grassley wrangled with Ford's lawyers for the last week over the exact terms of her appearance.

The controversy over Kavanaugh is unfolding just weeks before November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans.

A White House spokeswoman says the administration stands by the nominee, labelling the allegation "the latest in a co-ordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear a good man down".

"This is a smear, plain and simple", Kavanaugh said.

White House spokesperson Kerri Kupec also called the latest claim "a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man". The magazine said numerous people they contacted did not respond to interview requests, others declined to comment or said they did not attend or remember the party. Mayer, along with New Yorker reporter Ronan Farrow, who has been behind several other stories reporting women's accounts of sexual harassment and assault carried out by high profile figures, reported an account by 53-year-old Deborah Ramirez who alleged Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party when they were both students at Yale University in the 1980s.

Ramirez was initially hesitant to speak publicly, she told the magazine, partly because her memory contained gaps because she had been drinking at the time of the alleged incident. There are 21 members of the Senate Judiciary Committee - 11 conservative Republican men and 10 Democrats.

Mr Grassley turned down Ms Ford's request that only senators, not lawyers, be allowed to ask questions. California's Diane Feinstein, the committee's top Democrat, sent a letter Sunday to Republican chairman Chuck Grassley urging him to refer the new allegations to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in order to ensure "a fair, independent process that will gather all the facts".

The bride told HuffPost that she wanted to be at the White House promptly at 1 p.m. for the walkout, but her nuptials weren't done by then. "They have also refused to invite other witnesses who are essential for a fair hearing that arrives at the truth about the sexual assault". We will be demanding the opportunity to present testimony to the committee and will likewise be demanding that Judge and others be subpoenaed to testify. All three told investigators that they had no recollection of the evening in question, the committee said.

Grassley's counsel said in a note to Ford's lawyers that "the Chairman asked me to relay again that he will do everything in his power to provide a safe, comfortable and dignified forum for Dr. Ford to testify".
