Luka Modric dedicates FIFA Best Player Award to 'everyone who loves football'

Real Madrid's Croatia midfielder Luka Modric was named Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year for 2018, while Orlando Pride's Brazil forward Marta won the women's award at a ceremony on Monday.

Didier Deschamps made sure The Best Men's Coach title went to France too, after winning the World Cup in Russian Federation saw him pip Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic and Champions League victor Zinedine Zidane.

Meanwhile, Brazil global Marta was named as the best Female player of the year after winning the 2018 women's Copa America with her country.

Modric was named Federation Internationale de Football Association men's player of the year at a star-studded show in London on Monday, but neither of the men who have dominated the prize for a decade were there to congratulate him.

The 33-year-old is the the first player outside of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win the prize since 2008.

Nine different categories were decided with the Goalkeeper of the Year going to Belgium goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, while Didier Deschamps won the Coach of the Year for guiding France to win the World Cup in Russian Federation.

Belgian Thibaut Courtois, a recent Real Madrid transfer from Chelsea, won the best goalkeeper award. It is my teammates from Real Madrid and Croatia.

"I want to give congratulations to Mohamed and Cristiano for the great seasons they had".

The award was decided by a collection of votes, coming from the captains of each global team, their managers, and designated media officials from each country.

It's surprising that while two Chelsea players were included, record-breaking Premier League champions Manchester City's players were omitted.

The FIFA Puskás Award is an award established on 20 October 2009 at the behest of then-president Sepp Blatter, in order to award the player, male or female, judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant, or "most beautiful", goal of the year.

Among the others honored in London were Peru's travelling supporters, who lit up their first World Cup in 36 years and German player Lennart Thy.
