White House denies ‘micromanaging’ Kavanaugh probe

Republicans, who are trying to retain control of the U.S. Congress in November elections, seek to balance their desire to have a conservative judge on the Supreme Court with sensitivity in how they handle the sexual misconduct allegations amid the reverberations of the #MeToo movement.

"Actually, I want them to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion", he tweeted.

"The White House is not micromanaging this process", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in an interview with "Fox News Sunday."The Senate is dictating the terms", she said. And we're out of the way and letting them do exactly that".

Conway told CNN's "State of the Union" that she was only aware of the parameters the Senate set on the probe: "It will be limited in scope".

While the precise scope of the reopened background investigation of Kavanaugh remained unclear, Trump told reporters Saturday that "the FBI, as you know, is all over talking to everybody" and said "this could be a blessing in disguise".

On Sunday Kellyanne Conway, a senior Trump counsellor, told CNN's State of the Union: "We trust the hardworking men and women of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to do their jobs, and they will determine what will be included within that scope".

The GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines Friday to send Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate, with the informal understanding that the FBI would investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh.

Republican senators and the White House have agreed to the investigation after California professor Christine Blasey Ford testified at a Senate hearing that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers. Flake, who is not seeking re-election, was instrumental in ensuring there would be a week-long FBI investigation, beginning this past Friday, into the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh. Two other women besides Ford have also lodged public sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh.

The FBI will question Deborah Ramirez, who said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party when both were students at Yale University. He is retiring at the end of the year and the Republican congresswoman seeking to replace him, Martha McSally, said nothing for much of this week before releasing a statement Friday afternoon noting Kavanaugh and Ford were "heard". The administration is said to be working closely with Senate Republicans on the matter, and Arizona Sen.

"We're not going to give it to them", Trump said. In her gripping testimony, Ford said Kavanaugh and Judge's laughter during the incident has stuck with her almost four decades later. The Judiciary Committee has said the probe should be limited to "current credible allegations" against Kavanaugh and be finished by next Friday.

"The White House is not getting involved in the FBI investigation in that way", she added. "I mean, come on". 74% of Republicans thought Kavanaugh was telling the truth compared to only 11% of Democrats.

On Monday, I was with the organization that I co-lead, the Center for Popular Democracy Action, and hundreds of people from across the country who came to D.C.to urge their senators to vote no on the Kavanaugh nomination.

But, he said, he understood his anger.

Horn, a lifelong Republican and frequent Trump critic, described Ford as "the most credible person I have ever seen publicly talk about this". "They don't care who they hurt, who they have to run over to get power", he said.

She indirectly criticized Trump last week after he questioned why Ford didn't report her assault decades ago. Kavanaugh, testifying hours later, said he was "100 percent" certain that he was innocent of the accusation. I haven't met her.
