  • Senate moderates criticize Trump for mocking Kavanaugh accuser

The White House and Senate Republicans are hopeful that Judge Brett Kavanaugh is one big step closer to being confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last week, Christine Blasey Ford told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a high school party in the early 1980s.

Second, as soon as Saturday, senators will take a final vote on whether to confirm Kavanaugh to a lifetime seat on the high court - or not.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has already started a process that will produce a crucial test vote in his polarized chamber Friday on Kavanaugh's fate.

In a poll released Wednesday by NPR, Marist and PBS NewsHour, 47 percent of respondents said they had a negative view of Kavanaugh versus 36 percent who said they view the judge positively.Another 18 percent were unsure or had not heard of Kavanaugh.

President Donald Trump, pushing to get his nominee for a lifetime job on the top United States court, said in a Twitter post on Thursday after the FBI finished its investigation that the allegations against Kavanaugh were "totally uncorroborated".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, was one of the senators who said she reviewed the material. "Nobody is supposed to be guilty until proven innocent in this country", he said, blasting Democrats and outside groups for the "literal mudslide of wild, uncorroborated accusations" against Kavanaugh. "The Trump White House working with the Republican leadership in the Senate deliberately circumscribed this investigation so that only a small handful of people will be questioned".

"I've now received a committee staff briefing on the FBI's supplement to Judge Kavanaugh's background investigation file", he said.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said the Trump administration was "fully confident" Kavanaugh had the necessary support.

The scope of the investigation has become the latest political battle in the larger war over Kavanaugh and the Supreme Court.

Republicans on Thursday praised the probe's report as they began reviewing the single copy provided to senators one-by-one, while Democrats rebuked it over the lack of fresh interviews with either Ford or Kavanaugh.

Flake, the third Republican swing vote, said there was "no time and no place for remarks like that".

Most Democrats opposed Trump's nomination of Kavanaugh from the outset.

On another question, 45 percent of respondents said they believe Ford is telling the truth about what happened when the two were in high school, while 33 percent said they believe Kavanaugh. Collins said Thursday that the FBI appears to have conducted a "very thorough investigation" of the sexual misconduct claims against Kavanaugh. Democratic senators huddled, preparing to hold a news conference.

The witnesses include Jeremiah Hanafin, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and polygraph expert, who conducted a polygraph exam on Ford on August 7 and found her "responses not indicative of deception", they said.

Ford's legal team sent a letter Thursday to FBI Director Christopher Wray questioning why his agents did not interview Ford, as well as other witnesses they said would have challenged Kavanaugh's testimony, including Ford's husband and her polygraph examiner.

President Trump tweeted on Thursday that "mean and despicable democrats" had treated Mr Kavanaugh harshly and unfairly and that was having an effect on the voters.

Flake, Collins and Murkowski all have criticized Trump for mocking Ford at a political rally in MS on Tuesday.

Ford, now a California psychology professor, has testified that when the drunken Kavanaugh attacked her, she believed he was trying to rape her.
