  • The Five Places Melania Trump Will Visit in Nairobi

In her first big solo trip overseas, the first lady is scheduled to visit four African countries in the span of a week: Ghana, Kenya, Malawi and Egypt.

US first lady Melania Trump feeds a baby elephant milk with a bottle, at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya Friday, Oct. 5, 2018.

The first lady was similarly immersed in the moment earlier at Nairobi National Park, where she had gone early Friday to highlight elephant conservation. In an unexpected and potentially risky moment, a baby elephant bumped her.

Melania held a baby as she thanked the orphanage staff for taking care of the children.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump quietly made a decision to once again allow Americans to import body parts of African elephants shot for sport.

The US First Lady arrived in the capital Lilongwe Malawi Thursday afternoon on her solo African trip that has taken her to Ghana and will see her visit other African countries.

The First Lady fed an elephant and met with national park workers. She also spotted two of the so-called "Big Five" safari animals: rhino and buffalo.

Her stepsons have also been criticised for their passion for hunting.

Kenyan first lady Margaret Kenyatta accompanied Trump on the safari, and the pair is expected to take in a traditional performance later Friday.

Trump is in Africa on a four-nation tour, with plans to visit Egypt this weekend after stops in Ghana, Malawi and Kenya.

She was shown a pile of ashes, after the park burnt 105 tonnes of ivory to dissuade people from the trade. "It is a attractive thing to see", Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday, 4 October.

Her visit has included promoting the work of the US Agency for International Development, whose funding her husband has twice proposed slashing by almost a third.
