Kavanaugh does not belong on Supreme Court, says retired justice Stevens

  • Why Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens Has Stopped Supporting Brett Kavanaugh

Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., administered the Constitutional Oath and retired Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy administered the Judicial Oath in a private ceremony later today in the Justices' Conference Room at the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh and California professor Christine Blasey Ford both testified in front of the Judiciary Committee on September 27 after Ford came forward with an allegation of sexual assault against the judge.

Stevens said "there's merit" to the criticism that the testimony demonstrated a potential for political bias "and I think the senators should really pay attention to that".

"The complaints do not pertain to any conduct in which Judge Kavanaugh engaged as a judge", Henderson said in a statement.

"I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said".

Sotomayor was nominated to the court in 2009 by President Barack Obama, who nominated Kagan the following year.

In simple words, adultery is defined as a person having sex with a man's wife without taking prior consent from the husband. The ruling jettisoning the 158-year-old colonial-era law means adultery is no longer a crime in India , the BBC reports.

By the time of his retirement in 2010, Stevens had served on the Court longer than all by two justices in the nation's history and rose to lead the Court's left-wing faction, despite having been appointed by Republican president Gerald Ford.

"At that time, I thought he had definitely the qualifications to sit on the Supreme Court and should be confirmed if he was ever selected". Wrapping up, Stevens says that Senators need to be aware of Kavanaugh's partisan attitudes and that it would be unhealthy to bring on a judge that would "only do a part-time job".

Stevens said he, too, has come to believe that Kavanaugh, a USA appellate judge, "demonstrated a potential bias involving enough potential litigants before the (high) court that he would not be able to perform his full responsibilities".

The 98-year-old, since retiring, called for the repeal of the Second Amendment in a New York Times op-ed earlier this year. Nine others were arrested on the fourth floor of Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Protesters against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh gather at the Hart Senate Office Building atrium on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018. Kavanaugh strongly denied the allegations later in the hearing, calling the hearing a "circus" and sparring with Democrats as they questioned him about his drinking and character.
