"Power is being restored in the coastal districts, however, it will take time to restore power in Gajapati, which is among the worst affected areas", said Sethi.

Fire services and local administration personnel were working to remove uprooted trees blocking roads.

Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts of Andhra Pradesh, and Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri districts of Odisha are the pointed out places under the danger radar.

Road communication between Paralakhemundi and Mohana and some other block headquarters in Gajapati had been disrupted under the impact of the cyclone, he said. However, the damage in Ganjam district is lesser than what was anticipated, said Padhi.

Gopalpur: Cyclone Titli made its landfall on Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast early this morning, bringing with it heavy rain and winds gusting at 140-150 kmph.

It is expected to curve northeastwards again towards the Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha, but losing power all the while.

The cyclone left eight people dead, besides causing widespread damage in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held a high-level meeting over preparedness in the wake of Cyclone "Titli".

Of the 15 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 13 have been deployed along with the Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) at vulnerable places. A total of 105 pregnant women in Ganjam and 18 in Jgatsinghpur were shifted to hospitals.

The IMD advised total suspension of fishing operations and shifting of coastal hutment dwellers to safe places. IMD's latest forecast report suggested Titli which has turned into a severe cyclonic storm over west-central Bay of Bengal and is further intensifying into a 'very severe cyclonic storm.

"The storm has caused heavy to very heavy rainfall in some districts of Odisha, damage to houses, street lights and roadblocks due to fallen trees", said Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi. The IMD has said the region will experience very heavy rain, which could lead to flooding, and strong winds.
