  • Mega Millions $900M, Powerball $430M Jackpots Await This Weekend

If somebody wins the Mega Millions on Friday, it will be the second-largest jackpot in USA lottery history, behind the 2016 Powerball jackpot that was worth $1.6 billion, split across three winning tickets.

A Massachusetts Powerball player was one of three people nationwide to come away with $1 million Wednesday night after the person's ticket matched all five numbers selected, officials said.

"The lottery officials who run Mega Millions tweaked the rules and odds of the game in October past year to make jackpots pay out less frequently, spurring their monster growth", Ascienzo, who has studied lottery ticket purchase data from 2012 to 2018, tells FOX Business. Colorado Lottery spokeswoman Kelly Tabor referred to them as "jackpot chasers", as the Powerball jackpot swelled to the second largest in lottery history.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been building since July 24, the last time the grand prize jackpot was won.

The Mega Millions jackpot is now up to $900 million. The odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 in 302,575,350.

Dreams of being a billionaire are now in reach, thanks to the Mega Millions. There are smaller prizes, from $2 up to $1 million, for matching some, but not all, numbers. The Powerball number was 15.

More than $1 billion is up for grabs in this weekend's drawings for the nation's two giant multi-state lottery games, and North Carolina players have as good a chance as anyone at winning. Players get five numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega number between 1 and 25.

Tuesday's Mega Millions winning numbers were 3, 45, 49, 61, 69 with a Mega Ball of 9 for a jackpot worth $667 million at the time.

Ascienzo also says while lottery jackpots are overwhelming played by low-income Americans, ticket sales tend to hit a tipping point because higher-income Americans are drawn to the higher jackpots as well.
