  • Trump threatens to send troops to border to stop migrant caravan

President Donald Trump threatened to deploy the military and close the southern USA border on Thursday if Mexico did not move to halt large groups of migrants headed for the United States from Central America.

Trump zeroed in on Mexico's role Thursday, tweeting that he cared more about the caravan than the recently renegotiated North American trade deal between Mexico and Canada.

Donald Trump has threatened to send the USA military to close the border with Mexico in angry early-morning tweets.

He instead deployed the National Guard to the border.

In April, Trump said that he wanted to deploy more United States troops on the border until the completion of his planned wall between the USA and Mexico. Any who are determined to have a legitimate claim will begin the process of being placed in a host country - which may or may not be the US - and the rest will be sent packing.

But at least five USA states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a since-abandoned White House policy to separate migrant children from their parents at the border.

Honduran migrants bound to the U.S border climbed into the bed of a truck in Zacapa, Guatemala, Wednesday.

However, by the end of Thursday, Trump was also thanking Mexico for its efforts to contain the caravan.

Any who decide to cross illegally and are caught will be detained and deported, the Mexican government has said.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry responded with a statement on Thursday that it would ask the United Nations refugee agency for help coordinating with Central American governments related to people seeking refugee status at the country's southern border.

Barely a week goes by without Trump warning about the danger posed by ultra-violent Central American gangs like MS-13, while chants of "build the wall" are a staple element of his pre-midterms campaign rallies. López Obrador, the president-elect, will take over December 1.

Mexican officials say the Hondurans won't be allowed to enter as a group, and would either have to show a passport and visa - something few have - or apply individually for refugee status, a process that can mean waiting for up to 90 days for approval.

Honduran migrants, part of a caravan trying to reach the USA, line up to enter a migrant shelter in Guatemala City, Guatemala October 17, 2018.

"We have evidence that this caravan is also very much politically motivated", he claimed. Hundreds of federal police officers and immigration officers have been sent to the porous border region along the Suchiate River which divides the two neighbours.

Honduran migrants wait outside the border between Guatemala and Mexico, in Tecun Uman, Guatemala, om Friday.
