  • Democratic Rep Accuses Jared Kushner of Being Behind Saudi Journalist’s Death

The crown prince had no knowledge of the specific operation that resulted in Khashoggi's death, a Saudi official familiar with the investigation said.

The United Nations has called for an independent, worldwide probe into the death, citing concerns with the credibility of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States alike.

The Saudi prosecutor has said that 18 suspects have been taken into custody so far.

However growing global pressure and comments by U.S. officials up to Donald Trump appears to have forced the kingdom to acknowledge the slaying.

Al-Asiri was a senior adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as was another official fired over the incident, Saud al-Qahtani, who was in charge of Saudi propaganda overseas.

Mr Trump says he'll work with Congress on what the USA response should be, but that he'd prefer not to hurt American companies and jobs by cutting billions of dollars in arms sales to the kingdom.

Turkish officials said Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate and that his body was removed - a claim Saudi Arabia has vehemently denied but Turkey said they have audio recordings to prove it.

There have been no statements of note released by any countries in response to Saudi Arabia's admission.

Oct 8: Turkish authorities summon the Saudi ambassador and ask for proof that Mr Khashoggi left the consulate. However, Turkish officials say they believe the columnist is still inside the building.

The White House said in a statement that it had seen the Saudi announcement and would continue to press for "justice that is timely, transparent, and in accordance with all due process".

Calling Saudi Arabia a crucial ally against Iran that purchases billions of dollars-worth of USA weapons, Donald Trump lamented Khashoggi's "unacceptable" death but praised Riyadh for making the first arrests in the ongoing probe.

President Donald Trump dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier this week for hastily convened discussions with Saudi and Turkish officials.

Germany has joined other nations in calling for a credible investigation into Khashoggi's death. Khashoggi had gone to the consulate to get papers he needed to be married. The suspects then attempted to "conceal an cover" what happened, the statement read.

The kingdom announced that 18 people had been arrested in the ongoing investigation.

"The kingdom expresses its deep regret at the painful developments that have taken place and stresses the commitment of the authorities in the kingdom to bring the facts to the public opinion, to hold all those involved accountable and bring them to justice", the statement said.

The announcement marks the first time that Saudi officials have acknowledged that Kashoggi was killed inside the consulate.

It is likely the United States will use Saudi Arabia's decision to form a ministerial committee to distance the killing from Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince, who in the past two years has risen to prominence.

Saud Qahtani, a powerful adviser to the prince, also was sacked.
