Cherica Adams was 7 months pregnant with #CarolinaPanthers receiver Rae Carruth's son when she was murdered by a hitman, Van Brett Watkins.

The former National Football League wide receiver was released from prison Monday after serving more than 18 years for conspiring to murder the mother of his unborn child.

Carruth was sentenced to 18 yrs/11 months-24 yrs/4 months in prison for his role in the murder of Cherica Adams, who was pregnant by Carruth when she was shot in November 1999.

Carruth was also convicted of shooting into an occupied vehicle and using an instrument to destroy an unborn child in connection with the death of 24-year-old Cherica Adams. Rae was officially released from prison on Oct 22, after serving a 18-year sentence for his crime.

"I'm excited about just being out of here", Carruth told CNN affiliate WSOC days before his release after almost 18 years in prison. He's set to be released from Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, later today. "I still have to work".

Carruth and Adams were driving home in separate vehicles after watching the movie, when Van Brett Watkins and Michael Kennedy pulled up beside Adams auto and Watkins opened fire. She died about a month after the shooting and the child, Chancellor Lee Adams, was born prematurely.

Carruth told WSOC-TV he hoped to be forgiven and spoke about how he was frightened about his release. I still have to live.

Carruth still claims he wasn't intending to have Adams killed, but has acknowledged a responsibility for what happened to his former girlfriend.

"He's matured. He's a lot more introspective than he used to be, and I think he wants to get out of North Carolina", he said. "And I just want (Saundra Adams) to know that truly I am sorry for everything".

Watkins, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, will not be eligible for release until 2046. And I want still for him to meet his son. Now free, Carruth has publicly said he wants to connect with his son and Twitter is going in on the conehead killer for having the audacity. "I will no longer be pursuing a relationship with Chancellor and Ms Adams. I promise to leave them be, which I now see is in everyone's best interest".
