Immigrants taking part in the "migrant caravan" slowly making its way towards the United States border unloaded on President Trump Monday; calling the Commander-in-Chief the "antichrist" after he threatened to crackdown on the immigrants should they reach America.

"It is a shame that a president so powerful uses this caravan for political ends", said Irineo Mujica of the group Pueblo Sin Fronteras - People Without Borders - which works to provide humanitarian aid to migrants. "If he doesn't repent, he's going to hell".

He criticized El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico for not stopping the group or otherwise curbing. "They're joining the caravans because the migration routes through Mexico are perilous for them and highly expensive", says Elizabeth Oglesby, an associate professor of Latin American studies at the University of Arizona, who has studied Central America and human rights issues.

That plan would create a number of legal entanglements, though the president's suggestion of a military option served to underscore his frustration with the situation and the lack of tools the US has to counter determined migrants willing to make the trip and prepared to demand asylum, whether deserving or not. The president has threatened to seal off the U.S. -Mexico border entirely, if necessary.

The president devoted one tweet to an explicit attempt to connect the caravan and the midterm election campaign, urging people to "think of and blame the Democrats" if they see a caravan or an attempt at illegal immigration. "The more that the border has become militarized between the US and Mexico, the more perilous and the more expensive the journey has become for Central Americans".

He added that the U.S. would begin "cutting off, or substantially reducing aid" to three Central American countries.

In interviews along the journey, migrants have said they are fleeing widespread violence, poverty and corruption in Honduras.

Mexican authorities have called on them to formally register their presence in the country so that they can be processed for asylum.

Trump offered no evidence that anyone from the Middle East is with the Central American migrants.

After taking office, Trump imposed a travel ban on people from several Muslim-majority nations, saying it was necessary to stop terrorists from entering the country.

In a series of tweets Monday morning, Trump expressed anger over the failure of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador to prevent people from migrating to the United States. "Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in", he said on Twitter. This entices more people to make this risky journey. The numbers for 2017 show that the USA has given Honduras at least $144 million, and that number will likely rise as final reports are compiled.

"These migrant caravans are not a border crisis", Oglesby says.

It was clear though that more migrants were continuing to join the caravan.

Trump tweeted last Tuesday that he had "strongly informed" Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez that he would eliminate aid to his country if he didn't stop the massive caravan bound for the U.S.
